No NFL? No Problem!

Because the National Football League is the most popular sports league in the United States, it may be hard for some people to find a sport to watch after the Super Bowl. Don’t worry about a post-Super Bowl withdrawal—there are still plenty of other sports to watch.

The National Basketball Association is in the middle of its season, and every game counts toward potential playoff spots. Since the Atlanta Hawks are first place in the Eastern Conference and can make a run for the NBA Finals, all of their games in February and for the rest of the season should be interesting. Watching the Hawks and other exciting NBA teams such as the Cavaliers, Warriors, Trail Blazers and Bulls should help fill the void of NFL football.

Another major professional sports league that has important games during February is the National Hockey League. Matt Lumpkin (JR) says, “Hockey is one of the most entertaining sports to watch, especially when the race to the NHL playoffs begins.” The NHL is one of the fastest-paced leagues in the United States, and it may even be exciting enough to replace the NFL in the offseason.

There are other sports to watch besides the four major American sports (football, baseball, basketball and hockey). As the first major tournament of the golf season, The Masters, approaches, the professionals are playing in smaller tournaments, including the Northern Trust Open and the Honda Classic. These tournaments are interesting sports events to watch on weekends in February. When asked why he watches golf, Adam Weiner (JR) answers, “I play golf, so I like to watch the pros and see how it’s done.”

If you enjoyed the World Cup, then you should check out the professional soccer leagues in Europe. There’s the Barclays Premier League, which is the British soccer league, and there is La Liga, the Spanish soccer league. Many players you might recognize from the World Cup play in these leagues, and the games are the fastest and most up-tempo in the world of sports, so even a moderate soccer fan would enjoy them. Finally, Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather, the two most popular boxers in the United States, are finalizing their long-awaited fight. Adrian Perez (JR), a boxing fan, said, “I hope Pacquiao and Mayweather actually fight, because it would be a good fight and my boy Pacquiao will bring home the ‘W’.”

You might miss the NFL, but pick another sport to follow. You might end up liking it just as much as the NFL. Also, don’t worry; the new NFL season will begin in September.
